Hawai’i is the home to many honu (green sea turtle). Olive ridleys, loggerheads and leatherbacks are usually only encountered in deep offshore waters. But it’s common for snorkelers and divers on all the islands to see the honu (green sea turtle) in near shore waters. Green sea turtles, however, nests in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, a remote, protected area where they thrive.
To some, the Hawaiian name for hawksbill sea turtles is ‘ea, but for others they are known as honu’ea. If you are looking to see a turtle your best bet is to go to hanauma bay after a fun parasailing adventure, turtle bay, or snorkel at three tables, or sharks cove on the North Shore of Oahu.
When Snorkeling the north shore go to Safeway to get snorkel gear, fins, and a snack for the beach then head on over to three tables a kid friendly environment with plenty of fishes and turtles to cool your turtle fever.
While on the East side of Oahu, Hanauma Bay is great for spotting turtles! They do charge an admission fee and are closed on Tuesdays. Be sure to call us for availability before you go.
